SEPANG, Sept 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) contingent produced an impressive performance at the 2018 World Firefighters Games in Chungju, South Korea when they finished third overall with 11 gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
The victory which exceeded the contingent’s target of five gold medals is also their best achievement since they made their first appearance in the biennial games in 2004.
Contingent head Hamdan Ali JBPM which was represented by 31 athletes took part in five sporting events namely badminton, bowling, golf, bodybuilding and darts.
“The success is the result of intensive training before leaving for South Korea,” he told reporters after arriving at the KL International Airport here today.
The 2018 Chungju World Firefighters Games which was participated by more than 60 countries was held from Sept 10 to 17.
Meanwhile, JBPM director-general attributed the contingent's strong determination and desire to make the country proud as the key to the success.
"Despite sending only a small contingent to the games, we managed to finish third overall behind Hong Kong and South Korea,” he said.
The JBPM contingent collected the 11 gold medals from badminton, bodybuilding, bowling and darts.
