KANOWIT, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The historic Fort Emma that was built in 1851 by Rajah Brooke and located at Jalan Kubu here will be turned into Muzium Warisan (Heritage Museum) in 2020.
Kanowit MP Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the fort was currently undergoing conservation work for 18 months beginning last month and expected to be completed by February 2020.
He said the conservation project, financed by the Sarawak state government, also include renovations on the exterior of the building, integrating it with the Kanowit Waterfront and the construction of a retaining wall.
Costing RM5 million, the conservation work also received valuable expert advice from Malaysia’s historical building conservationist Prof Dr A Ghafar Ahmad from the Universiti Sains Malaysia.
“The Muzium Warisan will become a very important tourist attraction in the Kanowit district and it is hoped that the number of tourist arrivals in Kanowit will increase and have a positive impact on the socio-economic development of the locals.
Aaron said this during the handing over of the conservation project and upgrading of Fort Emma by the Sarawak Public Works Department to contractor Crest Realty Sdn Bhd here today.
