SMAPK students' ingenious inventions win two golds in Japan

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- A group of eight students from the Sekolah Menengah Agama Persekutuan (SMAP) Kajang won two gold medals for their ingenious inventions – Pliant Cutlery and Nifty Tray – in the Japan Design, Idea and Invention Expo (JDIE) held in Tokyo, Japan on Aug 5.

One of the participating students, Nurin Irdina Haswanie Mohd Nazri, 16, said Pliant Cutlery was specially designed for people with disabilities particularly those without hands to facilitate them to enjoy meals using a magnetic concept featuring hands’ functions.

“The Nifty Tray or a multipurpose tray, meanwhile, is a specially designed tray to facilitate the process of food handling at hotels, restaurants, and hospitals to make it easier for people such as waitress or nurses to carry the food and drinks.

She said the idea to create the Pliant Cutlery was mooted following their observation on the disabled people’s difficulties in carrying out their daily activities, while Nifty Tray was created to help out waiters to serve food faster and without spilling food and drinks.

Apart from Nurin Irdina, other five Form Four students in the group were Nurfarah Diyana Daud, Ain Nur Balqis Taharuddin, Ahmad Hadri Azizuddin, Nu'man Nor Azam, and Faris Imadi Faizul Amin, while the Form Two students were Nur Insyirah Mohd Isham and Wan Anis Mastura Wan Ahmad Rahimi with Norlela Mohammad as the accompanying teacher for the trip.

Apart from the two golds, SMAPK was also awarded with the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations President Award (WIIPA President Award) at the same event.
