CUEPACS Urges Review Of Petrol Cap, Mileage Allowance For Civil Servants

KOTA BHARU, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) has urged the government to carefully review the method and limits of petrol use for official duties involving civil servants, particularly those who use their own vehicles.

Its president, Datuk Dr Adnan Mat, said while CUEPACS welcomed and appreciated the government’s initiative, its implementation must also take into account current realities.

“We value this step as it benefits all citizens, including civil servants.

“However, we are concerned about the impact on civil servants who use their own vehicles for outstation assignments. If petrol use exceeds the limit, will the price remain the same or will it increase?” he told a press conference after officiating the Kelantan CUEPACS Triennial Delegates Conference at the Teacher Education Institute here today.

He said CUEPACS is still awaiting detailed information regarding the petrol cap and implementation method under the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) programme.

Adnan said CUEPACS is examining the best approach to reduce the cost burden for civil servants who use their own vehicles while on duty.

“Among the proposals is to review the mileage allowance, which has not been revised since 2008, so that it reflects current needs and costs,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced that RON95 petrol will be priced at RM1.99 per litre compared with RM2.05 per litre starting Sept 30 for Malaysian citizens, regardless of income level.

Meanwhile, Adnan expressed regret over the arrest of eight individuals, including two civil servants, during an integrated operation by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) in Kelantan on Thursday for alleged involvement in a subsidised cooking oil smuggling syndicate.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident as it undermines public confidence in the integrity of civil servants.

“As the Prime Minister has reminded, with salary increases, civil servants must give back by delivering the best possible service to the people and the nation,” he said.

Yesterday, Bernama reported that two enforcement officers were among eight individuals detained for allegedly orchestrating counter settings in the diversion of 11,050 kilogrammes of subsidised cooking oil during the KPDN Kelantan operation with the cooperation of the marine police.
