KULAI, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- The Safe Internet Campaign, introduced by the government through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is seen to be able to foster responsible digital behaviour among students.
Foon Yew High School Kulai’s Online Safety (K-DAT) icon for the teacher category, Tay Yap Hong, said that such programmes can raise awareness through advocacy, encouraging students to be more responsible and mindful of one another.
She said that the campaign at the school used the teaching session plan module for secondary school students aged 13 to 17, with a focus on preparing young people to use the internet.
“I prefer to implement the Safe Internet Campaign at the secondary school level, using the peer method, where students remind one another about the limits of internet and social media use, as well as the risks of issues such as cyberbullying, gambling and other negative activities.
“Peers are the individuals closest to teenagers, while teachers serve as the source of reference and guidance if something happens,” she told Bernama after delivering a talk during the Safe Internet Campaign at Foon Yew High School Kulai, today, which was attended by more than 200 students.
Also present at the campaign were Johor MCMC Development Section director Khairol Nizam Mohd Mostar; Deputy Communications Minister’s special officer (Public Relations) Wahidatul ‘Abdah Aminul Rashid; and Foon Yew High School Kulai vice-principal Chua Soon Cheng.
Meanwhile, the school’s K-DAT icon (student category), Pang Jing En, 16, said that she is ready to share her knowledge of social media culture with her schoolmates, especially in addressing misconduct which occurs in the virtual world among peers.
She said that the misuse of social media among teenagers has become worrying, particularly cases of cyberbullying through the posting of negative comments, which can cause distress and pressure to the account owners involved.
“As the school’s Safe Internet Campaign icon, my role is to support friends who are affected by such issues by offering encouragement, while also raising awareness on online safety and digital ethics when using the internet and social media,” she said.
Meanwhile, Wahidatul said that the ministry would also provide assistance to students who had fallen victim to negative online incidents, such as fraud and threats.
