KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- The organisers of 2025 Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) have assured that rider safety will be improved through full compliance with the stipulated standard operating procedures (SOPs).
National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Jefri Ngadirin said that a series of meetings with all stakeholders, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), have been held to review the safety aspects throughout the race.
“With the experience we have had since 2023, safety issues have not arisen. Police have also increased their presence to ensure that this race is well-controlled.
“At the same time, don’t forget that the International Cycling Union (UCI) also has SOPs that must be followed. So, we always follow all the guidelines set by the UCI and PDRM,” he told reporters here today.
On Sept 6, a participant in the 2025 Langkawi Legendary Ride (LLR) died in an accident while cycling on Jalan Kuala Muda at about 8.45 am. Low Beng Seng, 28, died at the scene from severe head injuries when he veered into the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming car.
Meanwhile, LTdL chief operating officer (COO) Emir Abdul Jalal said this year's edition costs about RM19.5 million to organise, with RM7.5 million covered through sponsorship, including RM1 million from BubblesO2 (sponsor of King of the Mountains polka dot Jersey) in cash and kind.
He stressed that since this event is organised under NSC, every cent from government grants and sponsors is channelled directly to operations, security, infrastructure and logistics.
“From our experience, we are confident that this time we can organise it well and in an orderly manner,” he said.
He added that preparations this year will also be easier as the tour peloton only has to cross the sea once to Langkawi, compared to several times last year.
