KUALA NERUS, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- Guided by his late mother's advice and his own determination, Wan Muhammad Haikal Wan Kamri earned the East Zone Polytechnic and Community College Education Department Director-General’s Award, realising a long-held dream.

The award was presented at the 2025 East Zone Polytechnic and Community College convocation ceremony at Dewan Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) here today.

For 22-year-old Wan Muhammad Haikal, the award was more than a reward for his sacrifices; it was a profound tribute to his late mother, Sharifah Endot, 53, whose constant prayers fueled his journey to success.

The Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah graduate said the memory of his late mother, who passed away on Sept 5, 2024, due to intestinal complications, was his driving force.

The youngest of five siblings said she left behind words of encouragement that continue to motivate him in striving for success.

“My late mother always advised me to further my studies until I earn a bachelor’s degree. Every time I felt like giving up, I recalled her advice,” he said, fighting back tears.

Sharing the secret of his academic success, Wan Muhammad Haikal stressed the importance of paying attention during lectures to understand what was being taught.

The Kuala Terengganu native said he balanced his time between studies and being president of the Student Representative Council with a structured schedule.

“I usually study at night. I prioritise things. If there is more pressing Council work, I will do that first. But I always make sure every assignment is completed on time.

“A schedule helps to plan and avoid overlapping tasks. Studying becomes more structured and less burdensome,” he said, advising students not to give up easily when faced with challenges.

"The prayers of parents are the ultimate key. Even though my mother is no longer here, her prayers from when she was alive remain my strength to keep moving forward,” he said, emphasising that discipline and sincerity in the pursuit of knowledge are the true foundation of a student's success.

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Wan Muhammad Haikal said his ambition is to become a lecturer.
