KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- All mosques and surau under the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) have been instructed to hold solat hajat (prayer of need) for the well-being of the people in Sabah affected by floods and landslides.

In a Facebook post today, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, conveyed his condolences and expressed sadness over the disaster affecting the people of Sabah.

“May Sabah recover quickly from this difficult ordeal.

“All agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) will be on the ground to work with federal and state bodies in assisting the victims,” he said.

As of 8 am today, the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee stated that 2,897 flood victims from 813 families were still sheltering at 22 temporary relief centres and one permanent relief centre.

Since Friday, 13 people have died in landslides in Sabah.

In a separate statement, JAKIM director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said solat hajat will be held after Maghrib today at three main mosques, the National Mosque, Masjid Putra, and Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin in Putrajaya.

“JAKIM also calls on all Malaysians to pray for Sabah’s swift recovery, for disaster victims to be eased in their hardships, and for the people of Sabah in particular, and Malaysians as a whole, to remain under Allah’s mercy and protection,” he said.
