BUTTERWORTH, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- FIFA Puskas Award 2016 winner Mohd Faiz Subri is set to mark another historic milestone in his life when he leads the recitation of the Rukun Negara pledge at the Malaysia Day 2025 celebration.
The former Penang FC footballer admitted that while he has once put Malaysia on the global stage, this new responsibility brings a very different kind of challenge – delivering the pledge in front of the nation’s top leaders.
He described the honour as a source of immense pride despite the nerves that come with it.
“The nerves are indescribable, but no matter what happens, I will give my very best when leading the pledge,” he told Bernama at the PICCA@Arena Butterworth Convention Centre.
The 38-year-old said that leading the Rukun Negara pledge was far more daunting than performing on the football field, as it carries symbolic significance for national unity during such a meaningful occasion.
“This is truly a new challenge for me, because reciting the pledge before distinguished leaders feels very different compared to being on the pitch – the sense of anticipation is unlike anything else,” he said.
To ensure smooth delivery, Mohd Faiz plans to calm his nerves and clear his mind before stepping onto the stage, allowing him to focus fully when leading the pledge.
Mohd Faiz made history by becoming the first Asian to claim the FIFA Puskás Award, thanks to his stunning free-kick goal during a Super League match between Penang and Pahang.
The Malaysia Day 2025 celebration, themed 'Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni' is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Yang Dipertua Negeri of Penang Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas representing Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
The event at PICCA@Arena Butterworth will also feature performances by top Malaysian artistes, including rock queen Ella, Suki Low, Roshini Balachandran, as well as Sabah’s Dabra Sia and Sarawak’s Rezza Shah.
This year’s edition is being hosted in Penang, in line with the rotation of Malaysia Day celebrations between Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
