MPs, Assemblymen Urged To Be Cautious Of Phishing Emails - Fahmi

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Communications has warned the public, including MPs and state assemblymen, to remain vigilant against threatening emails suspected to be sent by irresponsible parties using phishing tactics.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said a reminder notice was issued through the Dewan Rakyat Secretary this morning as a precaution, especially regarding emails containing links or QR codes.

“The email is believed to contain malware that could hack the recipient’s device if any links are clicked. It may also be a phishing attempt, putting personal and security information at risk.

“So far, the emails are believed to come from the same source, using publicly available information such as official addresses and profile pictures from the websites of the Dewan Rakyat, the Senate, and State Legislative Assemblies,” he said at a press conference here today.

He was met after presenting a Tabung Kasih@HAWANA donation to 44-year-old Kwong Wah Yit Poh journalist Choo Kar Chun.

Also in attendance were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

Fahmi said the police are investigating the number of MPs who received the emails, and Google has been asked to assist with the probe.

He also urged everyone to enhance their cybersecurity by changing passwords at least once a year and enabling two-factor authentication.

“We must stay vigilant in today’s fast-moving digital world, especially with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Cybercriminals are constantly looking for ways to take advantage.”

“For example, if you receive a link to an APK file from an unknown source, like a wedding invitation, do not open it, as it could be used to hack your device and messaging apps,” he warned.
