SHAH ALAM, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- The application and registration process for those who want to be volunteers at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor is expected to start early next year.
State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said participation will be opened specifically to Selangor youths, including students of high school and institutions of higher learning (IPTs), as well as interested members of the public.
Mohd Najwan, who is also the 22nd SUKMA Implementation Committee chairman, said they will also activate the Selangor Volunteer (SERVE) team under the State Sports Council and Team Selangor to provide the required number of volunteers.
"The volunteers involved will be provided with suitable training modules, besides being equipped with basic skills and knowledge on how to welcome guests, the proper protocols and so on.
"This is crucial because they will be upholding the state's image (as the host). I have discussed with the Selangor SUKMA Secretariat and they are in contact with the local authorities regarding that matter (training modules),” he told a media conference to announce the 15th Selangor Games (SUKSES) here today.
Mohd Najwan was previously reported to have said that they were targeting the participation of 3,000 volunteers to make the 2026 SUKMA and Para SUKMA a success.
He said SUKMA would serve as a platform for volunteers to gain valuable knowledge in welcoming guests, managing various needs and organising national-level sports tournaments.
Mohd Najwan also said that Selangor's preparations for the biennial Games had reached almost 60 per cent, involving the upgrading and repairing of existing facilities, adding that they are targeting all preparations, including the venues, to be completed by next April.
Meanwhile, he said the Sept 17-Oct 5 SUKSES would see the Royal Klang City Council (MBDK) act as the host to the nine districts competing in 11 sports - lawn bowls, taekwondo, sepak takraw, netball, rugby, pencak silat, athletics, basketball, volleyball, archery and table tennis.
Over 2,300 athletes aged below 20 are expected to battle it out in the 211 events to be contested, with SUKSES using the SUKMA format to give the athletes an early exposure ahead of the biennial Games next year.
In the previous edition held in Hulu Langat, the Petaling district contingent were crowned overall champions after bagging 76 medals, including 33 golds.
