KULAI, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- The incident involving the hearse of Surau Nurul Haq, in Kampung Sayong 1, which was stolen and subsequently badly damaged in a road crash on Sept 4, has prompted various agencies to come forward with assistance, totalling RM170,000, today.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said that the assistance includes RM100,000 from the Lembaga Tabung Haji, RM50,000 from the Taqwa Foundation of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council, and RM20,000 from the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM).
He said the donations will be used to finance the purchase of a new hearse for the residents of Kampung Sayong 1 and Kampung Sayong 2.
“The incident involving the stolen hearse, which was later damaged in an accident, has touched many hearts. Alhamdulillah, the village community will now have a new hearse, which is safer and more comfortable for public use,” he said when presenting the donation cheque at Surau Nurul Haq, today.
Also present was Deputy Communications Minister and Kulai Member of Parliament Teo Nie Ching.
Mohd Na’im also expressed his appreciation to Teo, who contributed an initial RM15,000, as well as to private company QR Oyes Sdn Bhd, which donated RM5,000 to help ease the burden on the surau.
He added that the RM20,000 donation from YaPEIM is specifically allocated for the surau’s management programmes, including community and religious activities.
Meanwhile, Teo expressed her gratitude and said that she was touched by the donation, describing it as a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to addressing grassroots issues.
“This is a very generous donation, and we did not expect the minister to come all the way to personally deliver it,” she said.
On Sept 4, Kulai police chief ACP Tan Seng Lee reportedly said that the Toyota Hiace van, intended for use as the surau’s hearse, was believed to have been stolen by a 21-year-old suspect between 1 am and 2 am.
However, the suspect was later involved in an accident with a lorry while fleeing in the van at around 2.30 am on Jalan Skudai, sustaining only minor injuries.
The van had been acquired from a government department in December last year, through the property disposal process, and had not yet been used for transporting bodies.
