MELAKA, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- Handcrafted batik produced by prospects is among several local artisanal products showcased as a medium of cultural diplomacy at the 19th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) and Related Meetings, here.

Crafted entirely by prospects under Malaysian Prison Department rehabilitation programmes, the batik demonstrates how creative skills developed in correctional facilities could be transformed into meaningful contributions to society and the economy.

Ayer Keroh Melaka Prison Gallery product sales manager Insp Nik Mohd Fitrie Nik Abdullah said the initiatives had not only highlighted the quality of inmates’ craftsmanship but also reshaped public perceptions by promoting rehabilitation through arts and heritage.

“Through this platform, we are showing that our prospects have the capability to produce high-quality products such as handcrafted batik, songket and bags, which carry both cultural significance and commercial value.

“Earlier today, a delegate from Thailand purchased two neckties made from our songket. This shows there is interest in our work and we can bring these products to other countries as well,” he told Bernama.

The term “prospects” refers to inmates undergoing rehabilitation or character development programmes, as part of efforts to promote a more inclusive and positive narrative about them.

Nik Mohd Fitrie said each country has their own distinct culture, and  Malaysia’s creations reflect Malay heritage in a unique way.

“But the uniqueness of our prospects’ handicrafts is that everything is beautifully handmade, not machine-produced. This made our products special and unique, making them limited editions,” he added.

Melaka has become the regional focal point this week as ASEAN ministers and senior officials responsible for security and transnational crime gather from Monday until tomorrow for the 19th AMMTC and Related Meetings.

The events are being held in conjunction with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, reflecting the country’s commitment to building a safer and more prosperous ASEAN community.
