PHNOM PENH, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- Prominent Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi's son is urging the Myanmar government to grant access to his ailing mother and provide her with proper medical care.
The 80-year-old Suu Kyi has been under detention for almost five years since the military coup on February 1, 2021.
“The harsh conditions under which she is being held will inevitably have a serious impact on her health. She is being denied her basic human rights.
“Leaving mom alone and being denied access to family members, law enforcement, (and) outside doctors, is totally unacceptable.
“I do not want my mother to die in prison because she tried to bring peace, prosperity, justice and democracy to her country,” Suu Kyi’s son Kim Aris, based in the United Kingdom, said in his latest Facebook posting.
The State Councillor Suu Kyi, who received the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, has spent several years in detention over the decades during her chequered political career.
However, the government’s spokesperson, Lieutenant General Zaw Min Tun, has refuted Aris’ claims, saying it is a mere rumour to undermine Myanmar’s progress, according to media reports.
The state media, The Global New Light of Myanmar, in its editorial today, said attempts to disrupt and sabotage the election are efforts to prevent Myanmar’s political progress from moving forward.
“To ensure the swift restoration of a democratic nation, everyone must collectively oppose and resist any disruption, destruction, or obstruction aimed at the upcoming general election for all parties,” it said.
Myanmar has announced that it will hold national elections on December 28.
