AGC To Appeal Papagomo’s Acquittal In Sedition Case

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) will file a notice of appeal against the decision of the Sessions Court here, which acquitted and discharged blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo, on a charge of sedition.

In a statement issued today, the AGC confirmed that the appeal will be filed soon.

"The AGC has reviewed the ruling of the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court Judge, who acquitted and discharged the accused, Wan Muhammad Azri, without calling for his defence at the close of the prosecution's case for a charge under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 (Act 15).

“Section 4(1)(b) of Act 15 stipulates a penalty of a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or both,” the statement read.

This follows today's ruling by Judge Siti Aminah Ghazali, who ordered the acquittal and discharge of the accused after the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against him.

Wan Muhammad Azri was charged with the publication of seditious material on the Facebook page ‘Halid Hamidi (Halid Mat Kool)’.

The alleged seditious statement was accessed by an individual at a condominium unit on Jalan Tong Shin, Bukit Bintang, at 1.00 pm on Nov 8, 2023.
