BUSAN, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is committed to work with members of Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) to address energy issues involving artificial intelligence (AI), said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
He told a high-level dialogue “Energy and AI” that the rapid growth of data centres and AI-driven applications is creating new, concentrated demands for electricity.
"Meeting these demands sustainably requires not only scaling up renewable energy integration and strengthening our grids, but also investing in innovative cooling and storage technologies to ensure reliability and affordability," he said at the 16th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16) and Mission Innovation 10 (MI10) in Busan today.
Malaysia, as part of the 21-member economies in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, has been invited for an intervention during the CEM16/MI-10 forum, held alongside the APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting and the World Climate Industry Expo 2025.
CEM comprises 24 member nations and various international organisations, including Australia, China, the European Commission, India, Japan, and the United States.
Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, emphasised that AI and energy can become mutually reinforcing, with AI accelerating the clean energy transition, and sustainable energy powering AI’s growth, if both were managed responsibly.
"Malaysia is committed to working with all partners to turn this opportunity into shared and lasting progress," he added.
Sharing the perspective on Malaysia, he said these tools are central to achieving the national target of 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050 while ensuring grid stability.
"At the same time, AI can drive efficiency in industrial processes, contributing to significant reductions in carbon emissions across energy-intensive sectors," he added.
