Public Solidarity For Palestine Takes Centre Stage At Sumud Nusantara Carnival

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 (Bernama) -- The Sumud Nusantara Carnival at Dataran Merdeka today drew Malaysians from all walks of life in a united display of solidarity with the people of Palestine, while offering a timely reminder of the value of peace and independence.

The event attracted a diverse crowd, including local visitors and foreign tourists, who engaged with exhibitions and displays highlighting the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Many described the experience as emotional and eye-opening, particularly the exhibits portraying the daily struggles faced by Palestinian children and families.

Nityanandhan, from Puchong, said attending the carnival for the first time underscored the need for unity and empathy across racial and religious boundaries.

“We’re grateful to live in a peaceful country, but it’s important to recognise the hardship others face and show our support however we can,” he told Bernama.

Another visitor, Azlan, became visibly emotional while watching a video installation on the plight of Palestinian children.

“We must be truly grateful to live in a peaceful, independent nation, especially when compared to our brothers and sisters of the same faith over there.

“While we may not be able to stand with them on the ground, we can at least express our solidarity and show that they are not alone,” he said.

The carnival also featured artefacts brought from Palestine, including historical manuscripts and a symbolic key to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

According to visitor Mohd Azmil from Ampang, the exhibits served as an essential educational opportunity, particularly for children.

“It’s one thing to hear about Palestine in the news, but seeing these items in person helps children understand the real impact. It also raises awareness among tourists who might not be exposed to this issue in their own countries,” he said.

Eric Soon, a visitor from Penang, said he came across the event while exploring heritage sites in the capital and found it both informative and thought-provoking.

“This kind of initiative really helps raise awareness and present the facts. I hope the people in Gaza and the Middle East can one day live in peace under more diplomatic conditions,” he said.

Filipino tourist Renee Espayos, who stumbled upon the event during her holiday, also praised the initiative.

“I like how open and accessible it is, and I think it’s really educational,” she said.
