KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- A 16-member Robotics Team from the Polytechnic and Community College (POLYCC) will depart for Daegu, South Korea, this Friday to compete in the 30th FIRA RoboWorld Cup and Summit 2025, scheduled to take place from Aug 11 to 15.

Deputy Minister of Higher Education Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the ministry has set a target of 10 gold medals across the 17 competition categories and is offering a RM1,000 incentive for each gold medal won by the team.

“We conduct screenings at each polytechnic, then bring the top talents to the national level, and from there, select the best to represent Malaysia internationally. We hope they perform well in this tournament, but more importantly, we want them to develop a competitive spirit,” he told reporters at a ceremony to flag off the participants at the Polytechnic and Community College Education Department (JPPKK) here.

He added that the experience would allow students to gain new insights, learn practical robotics skills, and compete with participants from around the world, an essential element in preparing Malaysia to become a developed nation.

The flagging off ceremony was also attended by JPPKK  director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Zahari Ismail.

The group of students, with five accompanying lecturers, will represent POLYCC in four competition categories, namely HuroCup, Autonomous Car Challenge, Air-Drone Autonomous Race, and Air-Drone Emergency Service.

The FIRA POLYCC team is represented by four institutions, namely Sultan Azlan Shah Polytechnic (PSAS), Sultan Idris Shah Polytechnic (PSIS), Port Dickson Polytechnic (PPD) and Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Polytechnic.

Mustapha also described the team as “small ambassadors” of Malaysia, showcasing to the world that technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Malaysia is not second-class, but on par with international standards.

For the record, the PPD team was the recipient of the Best Technical Startup Award in the Innovation and Business category at the FIRA RoboWorld Cup 2024 in Maranhao, Sao Luiz, Brazil.

The PSAS and PSIS teams also topped the HuroCup category by winning one gold, one silver and one bronze each in the FIRA RoboWorld Cup 2023 held in Wolfenbuttel, Germany
