PUTRAJAYA, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- The Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia) will examine each resolution presented at the Urban Renewal Convention (URA), organised by UMNO, including proposals to improve the Urban Renewal Bill.
Its director-general, Datuk Dr Alias Rameli said the move was in line with the agency’s mandate as the country’s development planner, ensuring that the proposals submitted align with the principles of sustainable, inclusive, and fair urban and rural planning for all parties.
“PLANMalaysia welcomes the URA Convention resolutions because they align with the government's efforts to strengthen the urban renewal agenda,” he said in a statement today.
“PLANMalaysia is committed to ensure each proposal will be reviewed to align with existing policies and provide comprehensive benefits to the people."
The recent UMNO-organised URA convention brought together various stakeholders to discuss urban redevelopment issues, including legal, socio-economic, and the well-being of the affected residents.
The resolutions, among others things, express UMNO's commitment to finding solutions to the problems faced by the people, particularly regarding urban renewal and the well-being of urban communities.
In the same statement, PLANMalaysia said the input and resolutions generated through the convention will be used as an important reference in the policy-making process and the creation of a new, more effective legal framework.
PLANMalaysia emphasises that urban renewal initiatives should not be driven solely by the profit of certain parties, but should instead be centred on the well-being of the people, and a balance between the interests of landowners, local communities and the overall development of the country.
"The process of engaging with all stakeholders will continue to be prioritised to ensure that the URA Bill being drafted is comprehensive, fair and effective," according to the statement.
The statement also said that PLANMalaysia is confident that close collaboration between the government, local authorities, developers, civil society, academic institutions, and political parties is key to more orderly and sustainable urban development.
“In this context, the URA Convention becomes an important platform for building mutual understanding and formulating practical solutions for the benefit of the people and the country," according to the statement.
In this regard, PLANMalaysia expresses its appreciation for UMNO's initiative in organising the convention and affirms its commitment to study and consider the resolutions presented to strengthen a more structured, balanced, and sustainable urban renewal agenda in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI.
