Amarjit Makes History After Being Elected As UCI Vice-president

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill created history when he was elected as vice-president of the International Cycling Union (UCI) at its 194th Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, yesterday.

The MNCF said in a statement that Amarjit is the first Malaysian to hold that position in the world governing body.

Amarjit described his election as not only a personal achievement but also the delegates’ recognition of Asia's increasingly important role in shaping the future of world cycling.

"This is proof of the trust placed in me by my peers in the global cycling community, and I dedicate this success to serving the global cycling family with integrity, inclusivity and vision.

"I am highly committed to working together with UCI president David Lappartient, and my colleagues to ensure cycling continues to inspire, unite and expand on every continent,” Amarjit said in the statement.

Meanwhile, Lappartient welcomed Amarjit's election, saying that he (Amarjit) brings vast experience as president of the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) and has a progressive vision for the development of world cycling.

He added that Amarjit's presence in the UCI's highest leadership reflected Asia's increasingly influential voice in the global arena, in addition to playing a key role in ensuring cycling continues to flourish.

Meanwhile, Lappartient retained his position for a third consecutive term after being returned unopposed at the 194th UCI Congress.

Apart from Amarjit, others elected as UCI vice-presidents for the 2025-2029 term are Italy's Enrico Della Casa, Katerina Nash of the Czech Republic and Cuba's José Manuel Pelaez.
