Jalan Burma Reopened After Sinkhole Repairs Completed This Morning

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Jalan Burma, which had been affected by a sinkhole, is now fully opened after repair work was completed early this morning, said Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.

He said repairs were completed by 4 am, allowing the main route to be reopened to the public.

“The road is now fully open and safe for use,” he said in a brief statement today.

Rajendran added that the sinkhole occurred last Sunday at around 9 am, when a 300-millimetre (mm) pipe belonging to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) unexpectedly burst, causing severe damage to the road surface and disrupting traffic.

On Monday, IWK confirmed that the sinkhole was caused by the collapse of a sewer pipe due to a shift in the pipe connection, which can happen suddenly under heavy loads, rather than being caused by ageing infrastructure, as previously suggested.

IWK also clarified that the identified pipe, which was believed to be the main cause, was actually located upstream of the sinkhole area. The collapse involved a 525 mm diameter pipe.

Rajendran further announced yesterday that the damaged sewer pipe had been fully replaced and a new manhole cover was installed early Wednesday morning.
