KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 (Bernama) -- The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has voiced strong support for the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), calling it a vital shield to protect students from cybercrime.
NUTP secretary-general Fauzi Singon said the campaign, led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), raises awareness on digital safety and teaches students how to safeguard personal information.
He said KIS guides students to use the internet wisely, ethically and safely, noting that cybersecurity is a critical agenda in today’s digital world with students increasingly exposed to harmful content and scams.
“Cyber threats are easily aimed at students who lack the knowledge and experience to handle such situations,” he told Bernama today.
Fauzi said the programme also helps students recognise cyberbullying and report it, while promoting positive online behaviour such as respecting others, avoiding slander and fake news, and using technology responsibly for learning.
“Education becomes safer and more effective when students can identify legitimate websites or apps and avoid exposure to inappropriate content such as violence and pornography,” he added.
National Parent-Teacher Association Collaborative Council (PIBGN) president Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Ali Hasan welcomed the campaign but urged wider involvement of parents and teachers.
“It should not be limited to students. Regular seminars and dialogues in schools will make the campaign more effective, especially when parents can directly engage with MCMC,” he said.
He noted the campaign has shown positive results so far and expressed confidence it will help curb technology misuse among students.
“We want this campaign to be ongoing and not ad hoc, so it can instil lasting awareness and responsibility among citizens,” he said.
As of Sept 1, a total of 1,928 schools nationwide had participated in the KIS module, including 144 in Selangor and 76 in Kuala Lumpur.
