PHNOM PENH, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh, with help from Cambodian immigration authorities, has rescued 30 Malaysians involved in an online scam in the kingdom.
In a Facebook post, the embassy said the Malaysians were repatriated via Phnom Penh International Airport on Thursday after clearance by local immigration authorities with the support of Sihanoukville immigration officials.
No further details were released regarding the victims or their arrest.
Cambodia has stepped up its campaign to crack down on online scam activities in the kingdom since July. Over 3,000 suspects from various countries have been deported.
Many of these individuals had been misled by agencies. They were promised casino jobs in Cambodia with attractive salary packages, but ended up working in scam centres under deplorable conditions.
The Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh has been actively cooperating with Cambodian authorities to assist those detained for cyber scam activities and have them returned to Malaysia.
