KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry (KKR) is open to studying a proposal to establish a special fund for road maintenance in industrial and high-economic intensity areas, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that KKR had not received an official proposal on the matter so far, but would be willing to study it if it could contribute to safer and more comfortable road infrastructure for users.

“I have not received the proposal yet, but if it can assist, we are open to reviewing it, as our aim is to provide safe and comfortable road infrastructure, particularly in areas of significant economic activity,” he said during a question-and-answer session.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Dr Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar) on whether KKR was open to studying a proposal to set up a special fund for maintaining industrial roads in strategic areas such as Kapar, a key contributor to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth.

Nanta said the Public Works Department (JKR) always prioritised finding the best methods for road maintenance, including conducting research and development (R&D) on durable materials capable of handling excessive loads.

“We are also conducting more R&D on materials to construct more durable pavements suitable for industrial roads,” he said.

Nanta said KKR was also willing to collaborate with local authorities, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and other relevant agencies, which regularly hold meetings to coordinate all road-related matters.
