KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu contingent is expected to compete in 34 sports at next year’s Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor.
State Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Hishamuddin Abdul Karim said this comprises 30 compulsory sports and four optional sports — silambam, Muay Thai, petanque and one more to be finalised tomorrow.
He said the Terengganu contingent is currently in the second phase of preparations and will enter the third phase, which involves overseas training.
“For the next phase, we need more exposure to competitions abroad to ensure other teams cannot gauge our strength until the actual day of the Games.
“The SUKMA Performance Committee, set up after SUKMA 2024 in Sarawak, has begun monitoring athletes’ training and performance as well as planning the best strategies ahead of the Games in Selangor,” he said at a SUKMA-related event here today.
Also present was Terengganu State Sports Council director Mohd Syahrizal Yahaya.
Hishamuddin said the state government remains firm in its decision not to send Muslim women athletes for aquatic events due to attire requirements that do not comply with syariah.
“We have already said early on that Terengganu will not take part in women’s aquatic events, and all parties have taken note,” he said.
