KOTA KINABALU, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- The National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) in Pulau Banggi plays an important role in providing rural communities with internet access, digital skills training, and improved access to information.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said NADI Pulau Banggi is also equipped with training facilities and information services to support economic development, education, and digital entrepreneurship.
“The Starlink technology at NADI Pulau Banggi provides high-speed internet access, with minimum speeds exceeding 100Mbps,” the MCMC said in a statement today.
It also said that NADI Pulau Banggi initiative, part of the NADI Malaysia Digital Inclusive Project, was named the winner of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2025 in the C4: Capacity Building category, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with United Nations (UN) agencies.
“This recognition reflects the MADANI Government’s commitment to ensuring that no community is left behind in the nation’s digitalisation efforts,” it said.
Yesterday, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil visited NADI Pulau Banggi to monitor the centre’s progress. During the visit, he met with local residents, including members of the Komuniti MADANI, and reviewed the telecommunications connectivity in Kudat.
Fahmi also assessed improvements in telecommunications coverage around Pulau Banggi, noting positive developments in expanding network reach and enhancing connectivity, particularly for communities in Sabah.
According to MCMC, the visit underscored the MADANI Government’s commitment to expanding rural digital access, thereby driving socio-economic growth and advancing the nation’s digitalisation agenda.
Pulau Banggi, located about 70 kilometres from Kudat, has a population of some 20,000 and an economy centred on fisheries, oil palm, and rubber. The island is accessible only by ferry or speedboat.
Kudat, a district in northern Sabah, lies approximately 180 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu, a journey of about three hours by road.
