KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Like living beneath the open sky, a single mother and her five daughters had no choice but to take shelter in a home stripped of its roof by termite rot, leaving them exposed to the scorching heat by day and the cold at night.
Nurwairani Mat Nayan, 49, said the wooden structure in the upper part of her home, where she had lived for more than 20 years, began to rot due to termites about three years ago.
“The ceiling started sagging in 2023, so I decided to remove all the panels so they wouldn’t fall on my children.
“The roof in the living room collapsed just a few days ago, but thankfully no one was there. I asked my friend’s husband to help me take down all the fragile, damaged parts, which is why the house is left open like this,” she told Bernama at her home in Kampung Batu Muda here.
The tailor said her unstable income made it impossible to afford repairs for the nearly RM50,000 damage to her home, forcing her to live in just the kitchen and two small rooms, including the one where she works on sewing orders.
The situation has left Nurwairani anxious, as her house is now vulnerable to weather conditions and potential safety hazards.
“I hope the roof can be repaired soon. I’m worried about the rain and the risk of electrocution,” said Nurwairani, who lost her husband three years ago.
Nurwairani said she had tried to prevent termite damage, but the area where she lived had been infested with pests for a long time, and pesticide treatments had been ineffective.
According to her, besides receiving RM500 from Baitulmal and RM800 monthly from the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), which her late husband contributed to, she was also seeking assistance to repair her house from the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP).
Donations may be made through the CIMB Bank account of Nurwairani’s second child, Wan Nurul Ayuni Wan Zulkifli (7638287447), or by contacting the single mother at 011-27608439.
