MTHQA 2025: Stricter Preliminary Screening Sees Improved Performances

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The performance of participants at the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA) this year shows a significant improvement as a result of stricter preliminary screening.

Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said this approach allows only truly qualified participants to advance to the competition stage, thus meeting international-standard performance levels.

"The recitation in terms of melody and tajwid meets the expectations of the judges and is not like before, where some participants were somewhat excessive," he said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTC) here.

Sirajuddin, as chairman of the panel of judges, said that almost all (memorisation) participants demonstrated a high level of mastery by successfully answering questions well throughout the competition.

"For memorisation, there's nothing you can't answer. He gave a quote from the verse, and continued... the majority, you could say 99 per cent of the memorisation participants were able to answer. However, there are shortcomings here and there, but it can still answer the questions," he said.

Meanwhile, Malaysian reciter Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi said she hopes to give back to society by educating the younger generation in the field of taranum if she is blessed with success tomorrow night.

"If I'm lucky enough to win, Insya-Allah, I want to continue my efforts to teach young people. The classes are already there, but before this, I couldn't focus because I prioritised competitions," she said.

Other participants are Mohamad Habil Walizada from Afghanistan, Kaiyrbay Dauken (Kazakhstan), Mohamad Mozammel Hossain (Canada), Nur Rahmiyatin Adhya (Indonesia) and Sansari Sos Yusof (Cambodia).

The event is televised live on RTM’s TV1 and JAKIM's official social media channels, starting at 8.15 pm.

With the theme “Membangun Ummah MADANI” (Developing a Madani Ummah), the 65th MTHQA, held from Aug 2 to 9 (tomorrow), brings together 71 participants from 49 countries.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to attend the competition's closing ceremony at 8 pm tomorrow.
