SEREMBAN, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- The Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly today approved a motion to appoint Dr Jufitri Joha (PKR) and Datuk Wu Him Ven (DAP) as Senators representing the state in the Dewan Negara.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, who tabled the motion, said the two nominees will replace Senator Datuk A. Kesavadas Nair, whose term ended on April 20 and Senator Datuk Dr Ahmad Azam Hamzah, whose term expires on Aug 14.
Datuk Saiful Yazan (BN-Johol), during the debate, said the nominations were aimed at strengthening Negeri Sembilan’s voice at the federal level, while also reflecting the Unity Government’s inclusive and progressive political approach.
“These appointments respect the spirit of political cooperation in the state. I believe the nominees represent the diversity of the people here and embody a balanced and inclusive government,” he said.
Transport Minister and Chennah assemblyman Anthony Loke voiced support, saying Negeri Sembilan’s political consensus offers a model of coalition governance without any single party dominance.
Loke, who is also Member of Parliament for Seremban, said such cooperation benefits the people and ensures continued economic development.
“I hope the new senators will serve the state’s interests in the Dewan Negara, regardless of party affiliation,” he added.
Jufitri, 46, is PKR Rembau division chief and served as president of the Malaysian Youth Council from 2018 to 2022. He is also active in professional youth work and advocacy for persons with disabilities.
Wu, 61, a member of the DAP Central Executive Committee, has been involved in community service, including youth democracy programmes in the northern states and coordinating DAP’s flood relief efforts in 2014 and 2021.
Separately, the assembly passed the National Forestry Act (Amendment) 2022 (Act A1667) Adoption Bill to strengthen the protection of Permanent Reserved Forests and improve forestry enforcement in Peninsular Malaysia.
Aminuddin, who is also Sikamat assemblyman, said the amendment also aims to clarify enforcement powers, including the use of compounds, to address ambiguities in the implementation of forestry operations.
