SIBU, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government is planning to implement the Integrated Logistics Infrastructure Development (ILID) programme across the state to enhance the logistics ecosystem and support sustainable economic growth.
State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the ILID programme holds strategic significance for Sarawak’s transportation sector, aiming not only to reduce traffic congestion and illegal roadside parking but also to improve road safety, optimise operational efficiency and facilitate the smooth flow of goods and people.
He said the Miri Lorry Terminal, which is Sarawak’s first integrated truck transport hub, is one of the projects under the ILID programme and will significantly help in centralising lorry operations once completed.
"The terminal will ease traffic on urban roads and provide improved facilities for loading and unloading, vehicle maintenance and driver rest areas, thus enhancing transport efficiency and safety,” he said.
He said the project had faced delays due to the retendering of the earthworks package.
He was speaking at the 40th Anniversary Night of the Federation of Sarawak Lorry Association and the 55th Anniversary cum New Committee Installation for the Sibu Lorry Association and Persatuan Pemilik Lori Kuching Samarahan at a hotel here last night.
“We aim to finalise the contract award by September 2025. Once that is done, the next phase of construction will begin as soon as possible. The Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) will continue to monitor progress closely to ensure timely implementation for the benefit of all stakeholders,” he said.
Lee said the Bintulu Lorry Terminal project is still at the planning stage, with discussions ongoing on its operational model and final site location.
“As for Sibu and other areas in Sarawak, we are still identifying suitable locations. We hope the truck operators’ associations will actively cooperate with MOTS to facilitate the planning process,” he said.
He stressed that the Sarawak government places great emphasis on the development of the logistics and transportation sectors, particularly truck transport, and is committed to working closely with industry players to create a safer and more efficient operating environment.
Lee also said Sarawak would be enforcing the federal government’s mandatory installation of speed limiter devices (SLDs) on commercial vehicles, with the first phase set to begin on Oct 1.
He acknowledged that while there are concerns among truck operators, especially regarding the cost of installation, model selection and implementation procedures, the policy is aimed at improving road safety.
“I understand the concerns about additional costs, but in the long run, the benefits include reduced accidents, lower vehicle repair and insurance costs, and a better corporate image for transport companies, showcasing the industry’s commitment to safety and social responsibility,” he said.
