BALING, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- The striking sight of Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officers clad in full operational gear stole the spotlight at the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) at the Baling District Council Sports Complex here today.

MMEA girector-general Admiral (Maritime) Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the initiative was part of the agency’s efforts to bring the public closer to its true role.

“Perhaps many Malaysians, especially those living far from the coast, are still unfamiliar with the MMEA.

“This is one of our ways of introducing the role of the MMEA and helping the public better understand the agency’s responsibility,” he said in a statement today, noting that visitors were also treated to a special appearance by nine-year-old Muhammad Khalish Sufi Mohd Noor Hisham in the MMEA uniform.

Meanwhile, Mohd Rosli invited the public to join the Malaysian Maritime Volunteers Team (PSMM).

“To date, a total of 158 volunteers have been registered nationwide, including 30 each in Selangor, Pahang and the Sandakan Maritime Zone in Sabah, 29 in Johor, 23 in Penang and 16 at the headquarters.

“Students from Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) and secondary schools are also encouraged to join the PSMM through the establishment of the Maritime Cadet Team (PASKAM),” he said.

Mohd Rosli added that a total of 586 students from IPTA, including Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), as well as students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Baging in Kuantan, Pahang, have joined the PSMM.

“Community involvement in PSMM and PASKAM demonstrates that the MMEA is fostering closer ties with the people while instilling a sense of shared responsibility in safeguarding the country’s waters,” he said.
