Malaysia's Renewable Energy Mix Expected To Reach 31 Pct Target By December

SHAH ALAM, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is on track to meet its renewable energy (RE) target, with RE already accounting for 30 per cent of the energy mix — close to the 31 per cent goal set for year-end, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

‎‎Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Tran­sition and Water Transformation, said that since the launch of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the government has approved an additional deployment of approximately 5.5 gigawatts of new RE capacity, valued at RM20 billion.  

‎‎"Since the launch of the NETR in July 2023, Malaysia has made tangible progress in its implementation, attracting at least RM25 billion of investment from both public and private sectors.

‎‎"The federal government has committed to a RM2 billion seed fund to catalyse projects. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2023 has already been enacted, and the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Bill 2025 has been tabled," he said. 

Fadillah said this to the media after the launch of the nation's first residential solar project here today. 

The residential solar project, piloted in Sime Darby Property's City of Elmina, introduces a rooftop leasing model that allows homes to generate solar power without upfront investment.

Participating households will derive income from leased rooftop space, while directly contributing to Malaysia's green energy transition.

The project is among the early initiatives under the Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (CREAM), introduced by the Energy Tran­sition and Water Transformation Ministry earlier this year as a continuation of the third-party access initiative for supplying green electricity to consumers.

‎‎Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported as saying that Malaysia is aiming to increase its RE mix to 35 per cent by 2030, up from the current 29 per cent.

Fadillah highlighted that ongoing efforts include the procurement of large-scale solar photovoltaic plants with a total capacity of 4,000 megawatts.

“Additionally, the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) was launched in July 2024, enabling companies to source or supply green electricity via the grid, thus providing a key mechanism for the uptake of RE.

“Overall, the NETR has made credible strides across sectors, " he added.
