KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- The courses offered at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) are not subpar, but are of high quality and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), said Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Sufian Jusoh.

He said that course reviews are conducted every five years to ensure the quality of teaching and learning, as well as to keep the curriculum aligned with current needs.

"The student programmes are determined by the courses they choose through the Central Admission University Unit (UPU) system, and admission is selected based on the quality of the students," he told a press conference at UKM, near here, today.

Meanwhile, on UKM’s new Anak Angkat initiative, he said that it aims to support underprivileged students in their pursuit of higher education.

"We open this programme to three students from underprivileged families, including two orphans. UKM will fully sponsor their education until graduation, covering tuition fees and providing pocket money," he said.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the university announced that 4,078 new students were admitted to UKM for the 2025/2026 academic session for bachelor’s degrees, out of 70,745 applications.

"58.8 per cent of students are from low-income families, and the intake includes students from various backgrounds across Malaysia, including 12 students with disabilities, six Orang Asli students, four sets of twins, and seven sibling pairs.

“Additionally, 355 international students from Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Indonesia, Singapore, and Sudan were also admitted to UKM,” read the statement.

It also stated that 29 students were granted a temporary deferment of registration fees while awaiting approval for financial aid, such as loans from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), scholarships, or zakat (tithe).

UKM is also providing support through various initiatives such as the Jejak Pewaris Watan Aid worth RM1,200, Bakul Rahmah, and hostel needs for selected students.

“UKM has also developed an internal application called e-Prihatin-UKM, which enables financially struggling students to apply for assistance online directly from the university,” it added.
