SANDAKAN, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that the conditions to become a government leader are to be clean, have clear policies and safeguard the welfare of the people.
He said during election season, leaders or candidates all wanted to be seen as heroes, but the quality of being a leader must be proven to the people.
“I’m explaining this so that the people are not deceived, people come here (wanting to be election candidates) all acting like fighters… the government must be clean.
“Secondly, policies must be clear, so that outsiders look at and come to Malaysia with confidence to invest, and thirdly, our policies must also protect the people,” said Anwar, who is also PKR president, when speaking at the Keadilan gathering in conjunction with 27 years of reforms at Dewan Yu Yuan here, tonight.
Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh and Sabah PKR State Leadership Council chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud.
Commenting further, Anwar said that in the upcoming Sabah state election, leaders chosen by the people, whether from national parties or local parties, must be able to carry out their duties effectively.
“Those contesting are Sabahans, whether the party is a national party or a Sabah party, that is the people’s choice to determine the state government.
“Therefore, the ones we should choose must be good, they must not steal (the people’s money)… they must be able to work well, and be able to work with the Federal Government,” he said.
Anwar said that through responsible leaders, Malaysia as a whole could become the most successful economy in the region and the world.
Citing the implementation of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah, which previously faced delays, Anwar said it stemmed from poor leadership patterns.
Hence, he hoped that the people of Sabah would choose leaders aligned with the policies and objectives of the MADANI Government at the federal level.
