ISTANBUL, Sept 21 (Bernama-Anadolu/WAFA) -- Palestine hailed on Sunday the official recognition of its statehood by United Kingdom (UK), Canada, and Australia ahead of the UN General Assembly meetings, saying the move would protect the two-state solution and help achieve peace, Anadolu Ajansi reported.
In a statement, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to the UK, Canada, and Australia for their “courageous decisions” to officially recognise the State of Palestine, which came “in line with international law and legitimate UN resolutions.”
The ministry called the recognition “an acknowledgment of the just and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, and ensures the protection of the two-state solution from the continued crimes of genocide, starvation, displacement, and annexation” committed by Israel.
Earlier, in a video statement on Sunday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that it has joined more than 150 countries in officially recognising the State of Palestine, ahead of the UN General Assembly, Anadolu Ajansi reported.
"In the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and the two-state solution," Starmer said.
He added that the moment for recognising Palestinian statehood "has now arrived."
"So today, to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly, as prime minister of this great country, that the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine," he declared.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his country officially recognised the state of Palestine, pledging partnership to build peace between Palestine and Israel.
"Canada recognises the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel," Carney wrote X.
In a statement shared on X, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “Effective today, Sunday, 21 September 2025, the Commonwealth of Australia formally recognises the independent and sovereign State of Palestine.”
Albanese said that with this move, Australia “recognises the legitimate and long-held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own.”
According to the Palestine News and Information Agency (WAFA), Palestinian Foreign Ministry said the move also provides additional momentum to regional and international efforts led by Saudi Arabia and France, to implement the “New York Declaration,” achieve an immediate cessation of hostilities, resolve the conflict through political and negotiated means, and restore respect for international law and legitimacy in peacemaking, instead of the “arrogance of force.”
The ministry called on countries that have not yet recognised the State of Palestine, particularly the United States, to take the initiative to recognise it, adhere to international law, and the Advisory Opinion issued by the International Court of Justice.
It urged them to stand on the “right side of history” to end the injustice against the Palestinian people and enable them to exercise their right to self-determination, as with other peoples of the world.
