ALOR SETAR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained an individual operating a fibre boat and seized 48 units of "bubu naga” in the waters of Kuala Sungai Dedap in Yan yesterday.

The Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone director, Maritime Commander Noor Azreyanti Ishak, said they detained the unlicensed boat at 11.30 am during a routine integrated patrol operation.

"The crew member, a 30-year-old Malaysian, tried to flee towards land, but we managed to nab him.

"Upon inspecting the boat, we found 48 units of 'bubu naga’, which has been banned as it could potentially harm the marine ecosystem and threaten the marine life population,” she said in a statement today.

She said the seizures, including the boat valued at an estimated RM112,000, were taken to the Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone Jetty.

Noor Azreyanti added that the investigation is being conducted under Section 8(a) and Section 11(3)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1985 for operating a boat without a licence and using unauthorised equipment.

She warned that stern action would be taken against those who flout the rules and urged the public to report any incidents of illegal finishing or suspicious activities via the emergency hotline 999 or the Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 04-731 0579.
