KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is awaiting further information from Myanmar’s anti-narcotics unit regarding a syndicate believed to be involved in large-scale drug trafficking into Malaysia, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said.
“It is still under investigation, and we are working closely with the Myanmar narcotics authorities. We are awaiting further details from them,” he told a press conference at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here today.
Last Saturday, a Myanmar daily reported that the country’s anti-narcotics team had dismantled a drug syndicate suspected of trafficking large amounts of drugs into Malaysia, following the arrest of six suspects in Shwepyitha Township, Yangon, on Sept 5.
During the operation, authorities seized 1,840 kilogrammes (kg) of methamphetamine, four million stimulant tablets and 14 kg of heroin hidden in a warehouse. The drugs were believed to have been sourced from Shan State and were intended to be shipped to Malaysia.
On another matter, commenting on the achievements of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), Mohd Khalid said that between January and Sept 14 this year, a total of 174,134 cases had been investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Poisons Act 1952.
He said 189,788 arrests had also been made, involving individuals at various levels of the drug chain, including traffickers, suppliers, couriers and users.
“These operations also resulted in the seizure of 83,305 kg of solid-form drugs and 69,155.85 litres of liquid-form drugs, with a total estimated value of RM1.96 billion on the black market,” he said.
Mohd Khalid stressed that PDRM would not compromise with any parties involved in drug distribution, possession, protection or related activities, and urged the public to provide information via the NCID hotline at 012-2087222 to support the fight against drugs.
