SEPANG, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- The Pharmaceutical Enforcement team of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) foiled an attempt to smuggle in unregistered medicines worth about RM17,100 through the Pos Malaysia International Hub (PMIH) at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here yesterday.
The AKPS said that during an inspection at about 11 am, the team detected a suspicious-looking package from Cambodia that was addressed to an individual in Klang, Selangor.
"Further inspection revealed that the package contained 3,420 unregistered medicines believed to contain psychotropic substances listed in the Third Schedule of the Poisons Act 1952.
"Among the seizures were 3,000 Alprazolam 0.5-milligramme (mg) tablets (Xanax brand) worth RM15,000 and 420 Zolpidem 10mg tablets (Stilnox brand) valued at RM2,100,” it said in a statement today.
It added that any attempt to import unregistered medicines is a serious offence under Regulation 7(1) (a) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984, read together with Section 12(1) of the Sale of Drugs Act 1952.
It also contravenes Regulation 4(1) of the Poisons (Psychotropic Substances) Regulations 1989, which is punishable under Section 30(5) of the Poisons Act 1952.
"All the seized medicines will be disposed of according to existing procedures,” it added.
