MELAKA, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- ASEAN is unique and stands among the most peaceful regions in the world, a distinction that has enabled the grouping to grow dynamically and attract global investments, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said ASEAN’s ability to uphold centrality while navigating complex geopolitical realities reflects the strength of working collectively as a team.
“At the same time, ASEAN has maintained its geopolitical stance by upholding centrality. It is not easy to navigate, but we are able to do so because we work as a team,” he said when opening the 19th edition of ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) here today.
Present were ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and delegates from ASEAN member states.
Anwar, who represents Malaysia as ASEAN Chair, noted that ASEAN’s strong bonds of trust are reflected in the frequent exchanges among its leaders.
Anwar said ASEAN’s uniqueness lies in the deep trust among its leaders, often demonstrated through regular consultations.
“This afternoon, while chairing the meeting, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called to discuss several matters. Such exchanges show how unique our relationship is, and I am not aware of any other region that has developed this level of mutual trust and respect,” he said.
He also cited the Singapore Economic Zone as a successful bilateral initiative that underscores the commitment to shared prosperity, adding that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has consistently shown commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties as well as cooperation within the ASEAN framework.
Anwar said he values the trust among ASEAN intelligence agencies, noting that it further strengthens regional bonds.
“For ministers responsible for internal security and enforcement, trust is crucial. If issues arise that create distrust or suspicion, we must be cautious. Without trust and the sharing of information, we cannot strengthen the bond we already have,” he added.
Melaka has become the regional focal point this week as ASEAN ministers and senior officials in security and law enforcement convene from Sept 8 to 12 for the 19th AMMTC and Related Meetings to strengthen regional cooperation and to address threats posed by transnational crime.
The meetings are held in conjunction with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, reflecting the country’s commitment to building a safer and more prosperous ASEAN community.
