PUTRAJAYA, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- The investigation into former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is still ongoing, with current focus on assets believed to be owned by him in the United Kingdom (UK), Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said.
He said the MACC is in the process of obtaining detailed information from the UK authorities regarding the matter.
“The investigation involving Dr Mahathir is still ongoing, and we are obtaining detailed information from external parties, particularly the UK authorities, regarding assets believed to be owned by him.
“If such information is obtained, we will announce it later,” he told a press conference here today.
In April 2024, Azam was reported as saying that the former prime minister was among individuals under investigation in relation to an asset declaration issue.
Following the investigation, both his sons have also been served notices to declare their assets within the stipulated period under Section 36 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.
On Jan 21, it was reported that, according to their asset declarations submitted to the MACC, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir owned assets worth about RM1 billion, while Mirzan Mahathir declared RM246.2 million.
On a viral claim by a lawyer who alleged intimidation by MACC investigating officers during questioning on Sept 2, Azam said he had personally sought clarification from his officers, and their version of events differed from what was shared on social media.
“Yes, that was his version, and after he made it viral on social media, I asked my officer directly for clarification, and his version was different.
“So I would say, the best way is to bring this matter to court for certainty. Based on what I received from my officer, the investigation procedures carried out were in accordance with the law and MACC’s standard operating procedures (SOP),” Azam said.
The lawyer, in a Facebook post, alleged that MACC officers had raised their voices and even threatened to detain him for non-cooperation.
