BALING, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- A total of 45 individuals registered as organ donors during the three-day MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) at the Baling District Council Sports Complex since last Thursday.
Kedah Organ Donation programme coordinator, Dr Norlida Mohd Jamil, who is also State Health Department Medical Division principal assistant director, said public awareness of organ donation remains low.
"Through initiatives like this PMR programme, we hope to raise awareness and improve public knowledge about the importance of organ donation," she told Bernama here today.
Dr Norlida highlighted a significant increase in new organ donor registrations in Malaysia in August, with 5,372 individuals registering, including 298 from Kedah.
“Kedah is ranked 13th in organ donation among the states in the country.
"Awareness of organ donation in Kedah remains low, with only 0.88 per cent the population registered as organ donors," she said.
As of Sept 5, only 645 new registrations were made, compared to 726 in 2024 and 1,337 in 2023.
"Currently, there are 10,805 patients still waiting for organ transplants from deceased donors. Kidney failure patients make up the largest group, with 10,776 individuals affected," Dr Norlida added.
