BUTTERWORTH, Sept 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Day celebrations are not just an annual affair, but an important reminder to Malaysians to respect and understand how the country was formed based on the spirit of federation, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said.
In his speech broadcast via video in conjunction with the 2025 Malaysia Day celebrations at PICCA@Arena Butterworth here tonight, he said that the true strength of our country comes from the unity of the people from various regions that formed the Federation of Malaysia.
“This celebration is a reminder to us all that the true strength of the country lies in the alliance and the agreement of its people that serve as a pillar to the country’s development,” he said in his video broadcast tonight, as he urged all Malaysians to continue to uphold the spirit of Malaysia Day and to defend the foundations that united the country since 1963.
“With this spirit, let us continue to work hand in hand and ensure Malaysia stands proud as a country that is progressive, prosperous, inclusive and respected throughout the world,” he said.
He also touched on Malaysia’s vital international role, especially as ASEAN Chair this year, under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“This year, Malaysia has a great responsibility as ASEAN Chair. This role has showcased Malaysia’s capabilities under the leadership of the Prime Minister in efforts to strengthen regional unity and foster close ties among ASEAN member countries,” he said.
On Sarawak’s achievements, Abang Johari said the implementation of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) has placed the state in fourth position among states that have achieved high-income status.
He also conveyed his thanks to the Penang government as this year’s host for the celebrations and welcomed the Federal Government’s efforts to rotate the Malaysia Day celebration in various states.
Anwar, Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow, Sarawak deputy premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, representing Abang Johari along with Sabah deputy chief minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya representing Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, attended tonight’s festivities.
This year’s Malaysia Day celebration held in Penang is in line with the rotation of venue between Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia on an annual basis.
