True Independence Also Means Staying Cautious Online, Says Fahmi

BUTTERWORTH, Sept 16 (Bernama) -- The public, especially youths, have been reminded not to be complacent with the rapid development of digital technology to the extent of falling victim to scams and false information in today’s fast-paced Internet era.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said true independence is not merely celebrated symbolically on National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM), but must be embraced with wisdom in facing current challenges, including threats from scammers and purveyors of slander.

“As we celebrate National Day and Malaysia Day, we proclaim ourselves as a free nation. But that freedom means nothing if we continue to be ‘colonised’ by scammers and slanderers,” he said when officiating the ‘Jiwa Merdeka: Aspirasi Belia MADANI’ programme here today.

Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Community Communications Department (J-KOM) director-general Datuk Ismail Yusop.

Fahmi urged the public to remain vigilant when using the Internet and social media, stressing that not all information encountered online is true.

He also reminded young people not to easily believe viral content shared by influencers on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and Instagram.

“My request is, please be careful. When reading, watching or seeing things on social media, what we see may not necessarily be true or accurate.

“If unsure, do not share. Verify first, then disseminate. I am giving out this advice to all young people as well as parents and adults to always be cautious of scammers,” he said.

The Jiwa Merdeka: Aspirasi Belia MADANI programme organised by Penang J-KOM brought together over 1,000 youths through various meaningful activities, including national awareness segments, e-sports and intellectual discussions, in conjunction with the Malaysia Day 2025 celebrations.

During the programme, Fahmi also presented medals in the leadership and volunteerism categories, along with certificates and trophies in the sports, cultural and entrepreneurship categories, in conjunction with the 77th anniversary of the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM)

A convoy ride featuring 200 motorcycles carrying the Jalur Gemilang was also held, with youths participating from across the country. The 6.1-kilometre convoy commenced at Petron Seberang Jaya and concluded at the official ceremony venue.

The programme’s highlight was an e-sports championship with total prizes worth RM8,000, including competitions in e-football (128 teams), as well as PUBG, Mobile Legends and Tekken, each involving 64 teams.
