MELAKA, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- McDonald’s Malaysia has contributed RM150,000 in corporate zakat to the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM) at a handover ceremony at the McDonald’s Kota Laksamana Drive-Thru outlet here on Monday.
In a statement today, McDonald’s Malaysia said the contribution was handed over by its chief people officer and Internal Halal Committee chairman Azhar Darbi to Zakat Melaka chief executive officer Datuk Mohamad Azmi Sabtu, witnessed by Melaka Chief Minister and MAIM chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Jusoh.
Apart from the zakat contribution, McDonald’s Malaysia also reached out to the local community by distributing 100 “Kotak Rezeki” to asnaf families and serving 1,000 free meals for attendees at the event.
The company, wholly owned by Muslims, has so far channelled nearly RM761,000 in zakat to the Melaka state government through MAIM.
Melaka is the eighth state to receive corporate zakat from McDonald’s Malaysia, after Perak, Terengganu, Selangor, the Federal Territory, Negeri Sembilan, Penang and Sabah. The initiative is also accompanied by contributions to asnaf communities in the respective states.
McDonald’s Malaysia said it continues to carry out initiatives that positively impact local communities, including offering job opportunities.
“In Melaka alone, McDonald’s has 15 restaurants which provide employment for more than 740 locals,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, managing director and local operating partner of McDonald’s Malaysia Datuk Azmir Jaafar said the company was honoured to fulfil its religious obligation and extend assistance to asnaf in Melaka.
“For us, business success is not measured by profit alone, but also by how we use our resources to help develop the community, and this is the value we uphold as a community-based business,” he said.
The company also announced that it has allocated RM2 million in corporate zakat nationwide for this year, and has contributed more than RM14 million to state zakat centres since becoming fully Muslim-owned in 2017.
In line with its commitment to being a caring neighbour across its 370 restaurants nationwide, McDonald’s Malaysia organises over 10,000 community activities under the Komuniti @ McDonald’s programme, including contributions to orphans, providing moreh meals to mosques and surau and visiting senior citizens at care centres during festive seasons.
