LIMBANG, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) Phase 2 project launched today will serve as the vital connector between the two states without the need to pass through Brunei.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the route would ease travel for residents in northern Sarawak, who would no longer face charges, passport requirements or immigration checkpoints before reaching their destinations.
He said the project would also open up new economic opportunities for rural communities, improve basic infrastructure and narrow the development gap between urban and rural areas.
“For the people in Limbang, Lawas and the northern interior of Sarawak, this project is highly significant. Until now, many have relied on logging roads, which are weather-dependent and time-consuming.
“Once completed, the SSLR will make travelling to Miri or Sabah easier, more comfortable and cost-saving,” he said in a Facebook post.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the SSLR Phase 2 project in Nanga Medamit here earlier today.
The 335-kilometre project, estimated to cost RM7.6 billion, is expected to be completed in 2029. It will connect Mulu, Nanga Medamit (Limbang), Long Luping (Lawas) and Ba’kelalan.
SSLR Phase 2 is a continuation of the first phase of the project, which stretches from Lawas to Long Luping. Construction began in 2021 and has now reached 57.6 per cent progress.
