KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- The public has been urged to remain calm and not act rashly following the rioting incident that took place in Kampung Sungai Baru here today.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail emphasised the importance of obtaining accurate information from credible sources before taking any action or sharing unverified news.
“The safety and security of all parties remain our top priority. Do not act impulsively based on unverified information, as it could lead to further unrest. With self-control and vigilance, we can ensure that the situation remains under control and harmonious,” he said when met after the closing of the 6th National Forensic Science Symposium for Law Enforcement (NAFSLE) here today.
Mohd Khalid confirmed that police have arrested three men believed to be involved in the riot that broke out during the eviction of 37 units of terrace houses in Kampung Sungai Baru earlier today.
The incident also resulted in Dang Wang police chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman sustaining a head injury.
Sulizmie Affendy was believed to have been struck by a stone thrown by an unidentified individual while helping to control the situation during an operation to disconnect the electricity supply to several houses in the area.
The operation was carried out pursuant to a court order for the demolition of house structures in Kampung Sungai Baru.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the police will ot compromise with anyone found provoking or injuring police officers during the operation.
“I was deeply angered when I was informed that ACP Sulizmie Affendy was injured by an object thrown at him. This is a serious matter, and I will ensure that those responsible are dealt with sternly. Several individuals have already been arrested,” he told a press conference after inspecting the eviction process.
He said Sulizmie had been sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment.
“I was informed that there were also civilians who sustained minor injuries, including a sprained arm, during the commotion. We will identify those individuals,” he said.
Elaborating further, Fadil said police had detected a group of individuals who were not residents of Kampung Sungai Baru but were believed to be deliberately provoking unrest.
“Some of the people gathered here are believed to be involved in activities aimed at causing chaos. This was confirmed by residents, who acknowledged that outsiders were also present and contributing to the disturbance,” he added.
Earlier, Fadil was also seen explaining to residents gathered at the site about the police’s duty to enforce the court order, to ensure they understood the reason behind the operation.
