Mosque Open Day Returns In Conjunction With ITM 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- The Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) is continuing the organisation of the iconic Mosque Open Day (MOD) programme as part of the Islamic Tourism Month (ITM) 2025, throughout September at nine selected mosques nationwide.

According to an ITC statement today, the doors of these mosques will be opened to the public, including non-Muslim visitors, to experience firsthand the beauty of architecture, history and the spiritual role of mosques as cultural landmarks that unite communities.

“This programme aims to strengthen public understanding of Malaysia’s Islamic heritage and promote Muslim-friendly tourism through an inclusive, community-based approach.

“Through guided tours, exhibitions and interactive activities, MOD encourages intercultural dialogue and appreciation of Malaysia’s Islamic heritage,” ITC said.

The mosques involved are Masjid Al-Qodim in Sarawak from Sept 5 to 7, Masjid Alam Impian, Selangor (Sept 6), Masjid Tun Abdul Aziz, Selangor (Sept 13), Masjid Muhammadi, Kelantan (Sept 15), Masjid Sendayan, Negeri Sembilan (Sept 18), and Masjid Zahir, Kedah (Sept 20).

In addition, Masjid Sultan Abu Bakar, Pahang (Sept 26 and 28), Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, Putrajaya (Sept 27), and Muhammadiah Chinese Mosque Ipoh, Perak (Sept 28).

ITC said among the activities to be organised are health forums, cross-cultural programmes, competitions for children and teenagers, traditional games, prime forums with invited figures, exhibitions and performances.

According to ITC, the MOD programme also supports Malaysia’s efforts to expand the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality (MFTH) sector, particularly in the run-up to Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

“By opening the doors of mosques to the world, MOD helps Malaysia strengthen its position not only as a leading Muslim-friendly tourism destination, but also as a driver of cultural diplomacy and cross-religious understanding,” ITC said.

ITC said that MOD also reinforces ITC’s long-term initiatives including Mosque Tour Guide (MosVi) training and the development of the Tourism Mosque Directory, which currently covers 51 mosques and can be accessed via the My Muslim Trip platform.

"With a total of 6,851 mosques across the country, 97 of which have been identified as tourism mosques, MOD plays an important role in highlighting mosques as inclusive tourism destinations,” ITC said.

The public may obtain further information on this programme at the official website itm.itc.gov.my, and are also invited to join the #ExperienceITM2025 TikTok Challenge for a chance to win prizes worth over RM50,000.

In addition to MOD, ITM will also feature the Global Halal Summit (GHaS) from Sept 16 to 18, and the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) from Sept 17 to 20.
