TANAH MERAH, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- The sight of little hands carefully pinning Jalur Gemilang flags along the school fence at Tadika Kemas Nur Iman, Kampung Bukit Kechik, was enough to warm hearts and spark excitement for the upcoming National Day celebration.
Their innocent faces lit up with pride each time the flags fluttered in the breeze — and while they may not yet fully grasp the meaning of independence, the spirit of patriotism was already alive in them
For teacher Nur Elyana Aqilah Hanizi, these small acts carry a big purpose. Beyond brightening the preschool grounds, the colourful flags serve as a powerful first lesson in love for the nation.
“Patriotism must be nurtured from young. We want the children to care for the Jalur Gemilang and respect it as a symbol of sovereignty.
“They are also taught the meaning behind the colours and symbols on the flag, so they grow up understanding what independence truly means,” she told Bernama recently.
Throughout the month, the preschool has lined up creative activities, from storytelling sessions to singing patriotic songs and crafting Jalur Gemilang-themed decorations, all designed to make the celebration meaningful yet fun.
Fellow teacher Nor Maizatul Akma Abdul Halim added that the highlight will be on Aug 31, when the children parade proudly around the village waving their flags.
“Every year they dress up in outfits inspired by the Jalur Gemilang, and the most creative ones will receive prizes. Parents are also invited to join in, adding to the festive atmosphere with their own flag-themed attire,” she said.
In preparation, the children have also been practising the national anthem and patriotic songs, their young voices carrying the echoes of unity and love for the country.
For Kampung Bukit Kechik Rukun Tetangga (KRT) chairman Mohd Nor Hassan, the annual tradition is about more than festivity - it is about passing on a legacy.
“We want these children to understand that the freedom they enjoy today was earned through the sacrifices of our national heroes. Instilling this spirit now ensures they grow up cherishing and protecting it,” he said.
The patriotic mood has spread beyond the preschool. Villagers have begun decorating their homes with the Jalur Gemilang, while community activities and a parade competition are planned for National Day itself.
