Gig Workers Bill 2025 To Be Tabled For Second Reading Tomorrow - Steven Sim

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The Gig Workers Bill 2025, aimed at providing protection and recognising the role of workers in the sector, will be tabled for its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow, says Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.

Sim said that although some quarters had called for the tabling to be postponed, the government remained committed to proceeding with it to safeguard the welfare of about 1.2 million gig workers in the country.

“It was not easy to get to this stage, we have waited for years. I do not want to delay it, because the government is ready.

“This is not a political issue, but about the people’s welfare, and I urge gig workers to support it,” he said when met after receiving a memorandum from the Land Public Transport Transformation Association (TPAD) at the Parliament building today.

The memorandum was handed over by TPAD president M Nathan with the participation of about 150 members who gathered to express their support for the Bill, which was tabled for its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

The Gig Workers Bill 2025 is expected, among others, to require platform providers to make Social Security Organisation (Socso) contribution deductions from every transaction of gig workers’ earnings, in addition to setting clear terms and conditions in service agreements to protect workers’ rights.

Sim said the law was crucial to ensure that gig workers’ welfare continued to be safeguarded regardless of who formed the government in the future.

Meanwhile, through the memorandum, TPAD, among others, requested for a floor price to be set for the e-hailing and p-hailing industries.
