Mother's Self-esteem Influences Children's Attitude Towards Education - Expert

IPOH, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- A mother’s self-esteem plays a significant role in shaping children’s attitude towards education, said Associate Professor Dr. Aziah Ismail, a lecturer at the Centre for Educational Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

She explained that mothers with high self-esteem not only possess confidence in themselves but also positively influence their children’s psychological development.

“This includes shaping their interests and motivating them to succeed in life,” she said.

Aziah shared the findings during a presentation on a study titled ‘The Influence of Maternal Leadership on Children's Learning Motivation in Perak: Maternal Self-Esteem as a Mediator’, which was also attended by State Women, Family, Social Welfare, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee Chairman Datuk Salbiah Mohamed.

According to her, children who observe their mothers demonstrating self-confidence and self-worth are more likely to adopt similar traits, learning that success begins with belief in oneself and consistent effort.

“Mothers with healthy self-esteem are better able to recognise and support their children’s interests, without doubting themselves or making unnecessary comparisons with others. They also tend to guide their children in setting realistic and meaningful life goals.

“Children’s motivation to succeed is often influenced by the emotional and mental support provided by mothers. When mothers believe in themselves, it becomes easier for them to instil confidence in their children,” she said.

She highlighted that parents’ motivation towards their children’s education is a key factor in family development.

She said it involves both internal and external encouragement that inspires children to approach schooling with a positive mindset and view education as a stepping stone for personal growth and future success.

“Children with strong academic motivation see school as an engaging and beneficial place. They attend with the eagerness to learn and enhance their skills.

“For them, school is not just a place to acquire knowledge but also a platform for social interaction and personal development. They understand that education helps them build skills, values, and opportunities for the future.

Meanwhile, Salbiah said the Perak government has undertaken various studies to equip mothers with the knowledge and guidance needed to enhance leadership within the family.

She said the state is working strategically with relevant stakeholders to disseminate research-based information on family development.

“This study ensures that our decisions are guided by data rather than hearsay. By doing so, we can design impactful programs that address the root causes of issues faced by families,” she said.
